A little while ago, I was lucky enough to attend a Social Media information session run by the wonderful ladies at Bris-Style. The speaker on the day was Jessica Van Den from Epheriell Designs who gave an amazing talk on many topics for us crafty folk, including the different social networking sites.
I don't know about you, but until the course I have to admit I had a facebook phobia, I thought twitter was only for self-indulgent people with plenty of time on their hands, and as for things like stumbleupon .... well I guess I never have! Thanks to this course I can now see that I simply must be on facebook, definitely have to look into tweeting, and could also benefit from a good dose of stumbling, among other things!!
I guess I have known for a while now that I am behind the times when it comes to 'socialising', and that I need to start 'hanging out' in more places! I have made a promise to myself that in the coming months, along with a new website, I will make sure I have a presence in other venues.
Thanks very much Jess for giving us an informative talk. And most of all for giving me a kick up the you know where!
How about you, are you a networking wizz, or does it all seem really overwhelming? Where do you like to 'hang out'? I'd love to know (even if it does make me feel like I have been waaay behind the times for far too long).

I'm on facebook and I tweet. Actually I just have an automatic feed of my blog posts sent to twitter and facebook because that's were some people hang out all the time.
ReplyDeleteI feel way behind the times too, especially since I have been out of the 'work scene' for a while. It's good to learn about all these things though. xx
O'h Michelle I am hearing you! I only took the plunge into face book last week after Jess's talk and so far it is ok (although it has been a little frustrating at times) whilst it has been nice to 'hang out' and see what others are up to, make some new friends etc I just don't know how I am going to find the extra time to fit it all in :)
ReplyDeleteHey Michelle, I recently started a Facebook fan page for the business but am still very reluctant to do a personal profile for me. I have to say I'm not without intelligence but I find Facebook is very non-user friendly. No one to ask for help if you get stuck and good luck with trying to find your answer in the FAQ's or help forums, it's like the proverbial needle in the haystack and all you'll find a oodles of other people with the same problem as you all looking for answers. I don't tweet and don't see myself doing it anytime soon... I've briefly looked at stumbleupon and will tackle that soon. Have fun with it all :)
ReplyDeleteHi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteWow you've enlightened me as I'd not hard of 'stumbleupon' before.
I use FB for personal use only, and even then I'm still a bit guarded. I think that comes with my not wanting to be in peoples faces with day to day comments, photos. I guess I could benefit from this type of social media talk.
I'm a bit slack on the whole front really. I'll learn through others like yourself though, so do keep me up to speed, as I'm always a 'Johnny Come Lately'. You should see my mobile phone!! Ha!
facebook, twitter and pinterest. I find all of them quite fun really, and a great way to connect with more people. I've actually met some fantastic people via twitter in person, which has been fabulous. Give it a go!
ReplyDeleteI'm still resisting.. I guess I just don't have time at the moment to hang out in lots of different places. I struggle to catch up with everyone in Blogland! Or maybe I just don't understand it all.. Rachaelxx
