House Sales & Giveaway

Hi everyone, please excuse my absence but things have been a little frantic around here. We sold our house after the first open and it settles in a couple of weeks! EEEK!!! Hence I have been packing ..... panicking .... then packing some more. Luckily we have found somewhere to live until our tenants move out of our new home.

I am also preparing madly for the BrisStyle Twilight Market on the 16th December along with working at my new interior design job! Anyway, in order to celebrate the upcoming Christmas Twilight Market I thought I would have a little giveaway.

This weeks Designer, Rebecca from Edward & Lilly, creates beautiful hand made embroidery, homewares, soft toys and accessories.

Based in Brisbane, Rebecca works from her home studio creating designs with eco friendly materials. Her designs can be purchased through online stores at Etsy, Bluecaravan, and Madeit. She also sells via the BrisStyle Markets.

Edward & Lilly stocks a beautiful range of limited edition Christmas decorations with each design being made to order - I just adore the way they are filled with lavender!

Not only does Rebecca find time to hand make all of her gorgeous creations, but she helps run the Brisbane chapter of Brown Owls with Sam from Jetta's Nest, works tirelessly on the BrisStyle Etsy Street Team committee, and is a member of DUST, the Down Under Street Team and EtsyVeg, the perfect place to buy wares from vegan and vegetarian Etsy sellers. All this and she works during the day!!!

Finders Keepers

As Brisbane dwellers may know, Finders Keepers was on here over the weekend. I was lucky enough to be featured on the Etsy stand!

Instead of selling at the market, the fabulous team at Etsy Australia (Thanks K) had Apple Ipads on hand for anyone who wanted to look up a seller. What a fabulous idea - it saved us having to load heaps on stock onto the stand, and also meant customers were able to see all of our online products .... ahhh technology!!

Anyway, I'm very lucky as my little magnets do seem to get around, and I am thrilled at the response!

Christmas Cards

In amongst the chaos of selling our house, I have found some time to start working on my Christmas Card line for this year.

I will be uploading some of the cards below into my store next week. They are so delightful - all the images have been hand cut from vintage Christmas books then adhered to recycled card.

I will also be putting some stamped cards and tags into the store over the coming weeks, along with preparing stock for the December BrisStyle Twilight Market.

I received a beautiful card today from a client thanking me for helping with her bathroom design. Isn't it wonderful to receive a hand written note in the post?

This inspired today's designer looseleaf-paper. Looseleaf is a collection of artisan, made by hand designs in Brisbane. Through their beautiful stationery, they believe in encouraging the good old fashioned art of writing. With a focus on eco design their range also includes jewellery pieces & giftware.

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to be published in the Home supplement of Sydney's The Daily Telegraph ..... "ahem" ...... well my Pink Heart Garland was anyway!
Yay!!!

Apparently my Atlas Peg Magnet's were in Melbourne's paper on Saturday too - will update you on this when I can.

I just adore this new range of homewares from Jane Hall.

Jane, who we all know most recently from her starring role in Neighbours, has just launched her online site Salvation Jane where she is not only providing a home decoration service, but also designing and selling gorgeous items for the home.

Jane's decorating philosophy is all about designing around what people already have, rather than starting from new. She believes that a person's home should reflect their individuality and personality. Something close to my heart too.

Her first homeware range includes bedlinen, scatter cushions, floor cushions and wall decals. They can all be purchased through her online store, and all at a reasonable price!

Hi everyone, with the holidays drawing to a close here in Queensland I can finally get back to some craft. Although we have had a wonderful break I must admit my business has suffered a little. Luckily I was able to keep up with my orders ..... just!!

Hope to put some work onto my website early next week. If you have the kids home on holidays, I hope you have had a safe and happy holiday. Can you believe we only have a term until the end of another school year??

Spring has finally sprung and it's a beautiful day here in Brisbane. To celebrate I have chosen to showcase the beautiful fruity spring designs of Whizzbangle.

Bronwen makes stackable sets of bangles out of resin in bold colours that can clash or co-ordinate as you would like! She also makes pendants, bowls and gift tags in an array of gorgeous colours.

There are so many wonderful designs to choose from, here are just a few of my favourites from Whizzbangle's etsy store.....

Along with resin Bronwen creates unique pieces using a combination of pigments, Pearl-ex powders and lately, spice powders. With future experimentation, Bronwen hopes to embed items such as papers, fabric, her much loved Birkenstocks, beads and coffee beans. Don't you just love how creative some of these designers are?

Hi everyone, finally I'm back working in my business and feel ready to start blogging again - look out I'll be visiting you all soon!

This weeks designer is a friend of mine who has finally taken her beautiful designs out of her studio and into her online stores. 4 Little Frogs produces gorgeous hand-stitched designs onto linen. Each design is meticulously cross stitched with beautiful thread and either mounted into frames or onto card.

I love that she not only caters for our little girls, but that she has something for the boys too. We all know how hard it is to find gorgeous art for the boys!

At The Races

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We went to the races of Saturday and had a really great day - I had a win ..... $3.30 after betting $1 on the nose! Oh yes, and the buzz did go to my head (or was that the bubbly?) it was all downhill from there I'm afraid - all up coming home I think I was down $6 - still it's the fun of it isn't it!!!!

It was a welcome break from the last jobs we are trying to finish on our reno. Yes, we are so very close to being finished now, just a few painting jobs to be done. Then apparently we can sit back and relax ...... do you think I could really do that?

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know that I have now officially changed my trading name to Paper Art Studio and have a new website to match - it's still a bit of a work in progress but I'd love to know what you think so if you have time take a look here. Of coarse I will have to eventually change my blog name etc. over too.

This Wednesday I am featuring Spun Mud by Bec Lindemann. Bec lives at Mothar Mountain, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, where she creates beautiful ceramics from her studio.

Her retro and paisley pots are individually thrown on her solar powered wheel. Each pot is decorated with original screen-printed transfers and then hand painted.

All of her Stamp Bowls are pressed with carved clay stamps featuring images and patterns from pop culture, or patterns influenced by fretwork found in beautiful Queendslander homes.

Designs are then bisque fired and gloss fired with clear glaze in her gas kiln.

Along with featuring at the BrisStyle markets Bec also has a permanent spot at the Eumundi Markets every Wednesday. Her designs are available for purchase through her etsy store.

It's that time of the week already!

On Sunday at the Racecourse Road Carnival I was really lucky to be next to designer Racheal of Penelope and Pip. Fellow BrisStyle designer Racheal is a Brisbane based illustrator who draws pictures of a girl called Penelope, a cat called Pip and their ever-increasing list of lovely friends!

Her original designs are drawn on paper, in photoshop and illustrator. Each unique print has it's own story attached, allowing the purchaser to immerse themselves in the world of make-believe that is Penelope and Pip.

Ensuring that she treads on the planet lightly, Rachael uses Hahnemuhle fine art archival paper made from sustainable forestry practices and produced with green energy. Rachael also reproduces her gorgeous designs onto fabric made from organic cotton, certified by Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).

Penelope and Pip designs are available for sale through etsy. Some of my favourite designs are shown below.

Hope you all had a great weekend! It was Carnival weekend here in Brisbane, well, at Racecourse Road in Ascot anyway!

This week on Wednesday Wicked Design we share a little Hey Harriet love! From the quirky to the divine, the expert photography of Hey Harriet brings us beautiful images shot in a unique and original way.

Some of my favourite images being sold through the Hey Harriet Photography etsy store are

using the TtV (Through the Viewfinder) method. Hey Harriet defines this method as “taking a picture of any subject through the viewfinder of any camera with another camera”. They use a Canon digital and an old twin lens reflex Argus 75 resulting in a square formatted photo with the characteristic black border. The image ends up with details like specks and blurred edges all contributing to the vintage aesthetic.

Images are also available on wood block. Each block has been lovingly cut from pine wood with the images being carefully placed on top. Just gorgeous!

Hey Harriet Photography also sell gorgeous prints taken from their illustrations. These are also available through their etsy store.

The Reveal

... and I say 'the reveal' because I cannot find my before pictures! You'll have to use your imagination, but when we purchased our two butterfly chairs (from ebay of coarse) they were covered in white chippy paint, and not in a good way in a bad way, they also had a lot of rust.

They had no covers and I immediately knew I wanted to use them inside so, after having them rust proofed and painted, we opted to cover them in cowhide. We used Adam's Allstyle Upholstery - the team were really professional and new exactly what I wanted.

As you may guess, we love cowhide - it's really really child friendly as all spills just run off. There was enough cowhide left over to have four floor cushions made up too ..... now I just need to figure out where I'm going to put all this new furniture! Eventually I want both the chairs to sit side by side, but for now they are apart in separate rooms.

Fallen out of love?

I was just flicking through the latest issue of Ikea Family Live, and besides all the lovely homes they feature (and every time I say to myself "that can't be ikea") they had this hilarious article about falling out of love with your home. Here is an exert from the article:-

"You've been together a long time. A long, long time. But suddenly, you've realised there's no spark, and you feel like the fire's gone out. After all, when you're not actually lighting a fire in your fireplace, you're obviously not enjoying time spent around it. As you walk around the void you deludedly call home, you might notice some signs that scream "hey, where is the love?".

The article goes on to talk about preferring to be apart from your home as the relationship starts to die ..... it got me wondering, what do you do to bring back the spark in your home? For me it's new cushions (I have cupboards full of them), and perhaps a visit to ebay or the local second hand shop for a bit of an added eclectic injection. Lets face it we can't love everything about our home all the time - can we?

Racecourse Raod Carnival

Just wanted to do a little advertising for the Racecourse Road Carnival that is coming up on 5th June. Those of you who live in Brisbane will know that Racecourse Road is a beautiful little coffee strip located in Ascot. What you may not know is that the carnival, formally known as the Racecourse Road Street Party (started in 1993), is back after a two year break!

The Carnival will block off Racecourse Road, run from Beatrice Terrace to Lancaster Road, then through the gates of historic Eagle Farm Racecourse … and into the Eagle Farm Fresh Food Markets. There will be over 120 stalls (of which I am happy to say I will be one), street entertainers, live music, children's entertainment, and of coarse all the gorgeous stores, cafes and bars along the strip will be open too.

When: 5th June 2011
Where: Racecoarse Road, Ascot
Time: From 9am to 5pm
Entry: Free

Hi everyone. Today I thought I would share my wonderful friend Michelle's designs with you. Some of you may already know Michelle as she has a business and blog under the name Sprout Gallery. What you may not know is that a few weeks ago she launched her beautiful artwork in her madeit store.

Michelle has been designing for a number of years, whether it be under her own graphic design label, or designing her gorgeous artworks.

Some designs are sold as prints and others are originals. I love the way she designs for boys, girls and grown-ups too! I have been lucky enough to collect a few of Michelle's designs over the years for my girls' bedrooms and my home.

Finally the kids are asleep and I can do a little post for the day.

I hope you all had a wonderful Mothers Day yesterday. I spent the day with a couple of friends enjoying a few (too many) glasses of bubbly whilst munching on divine rocky road.

Thought I would share the recipe with you as I made this for Easter too instead of buying myself any eggs.

250g marshmellows
200g raspberry lollies
250g salted roasted peanuts
375g dark chocolate melts (you could also use milk or white if you wish)

Roughly chop marshmellows (or buy the small ones like I do) and raspberries and combine with peanuts. Melt chocolate as per instructions on the pack and mix through thoroughly. Spread straight into a foil lined tray (shape of your choice). Refrigerate.

Oh, and the 'secret ingredient' is the salt on the peanuts! The salt and the chocolate make this quite different to a lot of over the counter rocky road.

The only problem is now that Easter is definitely over ..... I can't stop making it!!

Wednesday Wicked Design

This weeks Wednesday Wicked Design features fellow Bris-Style designer Helen of Paluma Print. From her studio in Redcliffe, Helen produces hand screen printed designs inspired by Australian Flora and Fauna. Each design is screen printed onto fabric and turned into beautiful handbags, purses, tea towels, place mats and aprons.

Each of her designs are accompanied by a description of the plant or animal that inspired the design which I think is such a lovely touch. And the name ... Helen says that Paluma is the name of a small village set in the tropical rainforest near Townsville, north Queensland, which is where she began screen-printing in the Eighties.

Helen also has a blog where she records the progress of her business, and her life of craft and creativity. It shows her latest creations and is a wonderful read.

Renovation Before and After

Yay, finally the sun has come out here in Brisbane for long enough to take some 'after' images of our garden renovation. So here goes ......

After (below), this shows how fantastic the synthetic turf looks. You can also see our bamboo trees that will eventually be a thick hedge down the side of the property. Oh yes, and we do need some furniture on the deck - it needs to be 'all weather' - any suggestions?

The BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets are on again this Friday night, and I am lucky enough to be on the co-op stand this time with some truly fantastic designers. One of those designers is Little Chrissy who makes, among other things, these amazing wall hangings ....

On Monday I posted about the lovely Jessica Van Den from Epheriell Designs giving a talk on Social Media, so today I thought it fitting to shine the Wednesday Wicked Design spotlight on Jess and her amazing jewellery designs.

Jess uses recycled sterling silver to create simply gorgeous jewellery under the name of Epheriell.

Love, love love ...

Another range, under the name of Vintette, uses a mix of vintage and vintage inspired elements to create jewellery pieces that look like they could have been passed down from your Grandmother.

Now, you would have thought that running a thriving jewellery business would be enough to keep her busy, but last year Jess decided to start a little zine called Bespoke. Bespoke is jam packed with crafty goodness with everything from interviews, tutorials, photography, vintage guides, recipes and much much more. With the first issue selling out, Jess has recently launched her second issue which is on sale now for $10 here. I am lucky enough to own both issues and have read them from cover to cover - I love reading all the inspirational articles and attempting the tutorials!

Jess also runs Crafting A Business where she shares all her crafty business advice and information. It's always a great informative read, if you have a craft business, or are thinking of starting one I strongly suggest you pop over and have a read. Oh, and Jess has also recently launched an e-course! I know, I'm also trying to work out when she sleeps!

A little while ago, I was lucky enough to attend a Social Media information session run by the wonderful ladies at Bris-Style. The speaker on the day was Jessica Van Den from Epheriell Designs who gave an amazing talk on many topics for us crafty folk, including the different social networking sites.

I don't know about you, but until the course I have to admit I had a facebook phobia, I thought twitter was only for self-indulgent people with plenty of time on their hands, and as for things like stumbleupon .... well I guess I never have! Thanks to this course I can now see that I simply must be on facebook, definitely have to look into tweeting, and could also benefit from a good dose of stumbling, among other things!!

I guess I have known for a while now that I am behind the times when it comes to 'socialising', and that I need to start 'hanging out' in more places! I have made a promise to myself that in the coming months, along with a new website, I will make sure I have a presence in other venues.

Thanks very much Jess for giving us an informative talk. And most of all for giving me a kick up the you know where!

How about you, are you a networking wizz, or does it all seem really overwhelming? Where do you like to 'hang out'? I'd love to know (even if it does make me feel like I have been waaay behind the times for far too long).

School holidays have started here today, my girls had a lovely morning playing with a friend. Her mother and I also got a chance to catch up for a chat - thanks for today divine Miss M!

I'm going to try and do some more artwork next week, after the last Twilight market I am down to one. Lets hope I get a bit of time to blog too. If your children are on school holidays, I hope they are off to a great start.

This week I wanted to share with you the beautiful designs of Melanie Gray Augustin. While living in Japan Melanie fell in love with the Japanese Kimono and Obi Fabrics, their colours and the symbolism of the motifs used in their design. Six years later, when Melanie returned to Australia, she decided she wanted to share these gorgeous fabrics with others and so Kimono Reincarnate was born.

Sourcing most of her kimono fabric from specialist second hand stores and antique markets, Melanie crafts beautiful pendants and brooches. She returns each year to seek out exciting new stock for her designs. Each piece is handmade and totally unique.

Melanie sells her designs online via etsy and through her website. She also sells through stockists Australia wide.

I just love the patterns of the vintage Japanese Kimono fabric, some of my favourite designs are shown below. There are many many more to choose from on her website.

How do you toast?

I have a always had a Dualit toaster on my 'list' .... you know that totally indulgent list of wants and desires for the home etc.

Anyway, recently our toaster broke down - now, this would normally send me into a total toaster investigation (as with any other electrical product I have replaced), but when this happened I knew exactly what I wanted.

I don't quite know what it is about the Dualit, but it has always screamed quality to me - from its sleek looks to its extra wide slots .... yes I do believe I am infatuated. One thing I have never been excited about though is its rather large ...... price tag! At a price of over $500 for a four slot it was definitely not going to fit into my rather smaller toaster budget. Enter the ever trusty ebay and, at a price of only $133, I found a four slot stainless steel and white cast aluminum toaster - perfect! It looks similar to this one ...

Dualit toasters were first invented in the 1950's, and even today each toaster is hand made with the individual makers mark stamped on the bottom - how cool is that?!

I received our new/old toaster today all the way for NSW, so I am yet to clean it up for photographing (my apologies). I must say, I am looking forward to using it at breakfast tomorrow morning.

Frangipanis, Craft and Rain

Despite the miserable weather we are having here in Brisbane my little outdoor renovation is still chugging along nicely.

As you may recall we had a garden design done a few weeks back, so on the weekend we planted out the front and back garden with our gorgeous array of plants supplied by Palms For Brisbane. Their design included 2 magnificent Frangipani trees for the front (I only wish that they were as big as the ones in the image above). Mr Paper Tree and I were very exhausted by the end of it all, much better than a workout at the gym!

As we speak my fence guys are working in the rain in order to stick to my schedule. All going well we will have the synthetic turf in before the Easter long weekend .... that is if the weather improves. I promise, as soon as it is all done I will show you all the before and after pics!

Other than that it is a day for some craft and preparing the house for dinner guests tonight.

Hope you all have something nice planned for the weekend. We are going to my nephew's 18th birthday .... can't believe he is 18!!! Happy Birthday Bradley!! I must say, he has turned into a fine young man.

Good Things Come in 3's

Hi everyone! Okay, I confess, this is just a shameless way of showing off my new 'number 3' cushion I picked up yesterday from Freedom (sorry about the pooch in the background)!

I just loved this cushion as soon as I saw it in the latest issue of Real Living. Why the number '3' I hear you ask when I could have had '1' or '2'? Well, as an interior designer (wannabe) I prefer to arrange my 'clusters' into groups of 3 or 5 - odd numbers always look visually better. Also, when we bid on anything, be it a house or an item on ebay, we always end it in a '3' and somehow this has always worked for us (cue the spooky music).
So it seems, good things do come in 3's!

This week I want to highlight a designer who I 'met' when she left a comment on my post earlier this week. Gabriella runs Stilelemente where she offers gorgeous artworks and products for the home. The name Stilelemente is German in origin, and according to Gabriella, loosely translates to Elements of Style - a very fitting name for her exquisite designs.

Gabriella draws on local Australian flora and fauna to create beautiful designs for her range of fabrics and cards. All of her cloths are natural/organic and/or fair trade, with her latest textile designs being created using naturally dyed tea-stained cotton.

Stilelemente's designs are available through bluecaravan and etsy. The range of natural colours used in all of the designs are simply gorgeous - take a look at some of what Stilelemente has to offer.....

My BIG Ebay Purchases

I know I've said it before, but I have to say it again .... I love, love, loooove ebay!!

We were in need of a new lounge for our main tv/lounge area as our old leather one was starting to show its age (about 10 years). We visited one of our favourite showrooms - King Furniture - in the valley only to discover that our beloved Jasper suite was somewhat out of our price range. Now I don't mind spending on quality as we already have a Delta lounge in our formal area but at a price tag of over $12,000 on sale for the leather Jasper we thought we would look at fabric - after all the kids are a little older now and a little better at not spilling/jumping/sliding around on the furniture (I live in a dream world I know)!!! Okay back to reality we thought that for our informal and comfy lounge area we would like to look at fabric ... I also thought I would try to find one on ebay.

After several months of looking (every day) - the jasper hardly ever comes up and when it does most people are dreaming when it comes to price, especially if they have not bought on sale - finally I found this one, and we love it!!! It was in fantastic conditions for its 4 years and although not exactly the colour we would have chosen at $2100 it was a bargain, and at least a third of the sale retail price. Yippee!!!!

We had to bring the lounge up from Bateman's Bay adding to the cost, but I have to say the team at Aladdin's were amazing - it was such a great process and was delivered when they said it would be!

My second BIG purchase was a Miele coffee machine. We had a steam oven in its place (which we hardly ever used) so we decided to purchase the coffee machine and pop it into the oven's space, let me tell you this is certainly getting a work out. At a normal price tag of between $3500 to $4000 it was also a bargain purchase at $932!!!! Don't worry we have kept the steam oven and will probably do a mini kitchen makeover to incorporate it at a later date.

One of the great features of the Jasper is its storage space .... my magazines are all housed very neatly ....

Lots of room for important nick-nacks too!!

Luckily we have a big space for the jasper as it takes up quite a bit of room .... now where am I going to put my two butterfly chairs that I am currently getting recovered (that's for another post)????

Butterfly Art Kits

My 'Butterfly Art Kits' are for those of you who love all the butterfly art that is around at the moment, but not the price tag that comes with it (I can say this because I sell them)!
Instead of paying for someone else (i.e. me) to make the artwork up and frame it, you can now do your own artwork via my kits.

Each kit contains over 20 butterflies, an A4 mounting card, and instructions for mounting. All kits are lifted from old (mostly vintage) childrens books and are available in many of our favourite stories such as Cinderella, Bambi, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio ....
I also do these kits up in beautiful red and pink papers if you are after the colours only.
They make fantastic gifts, and make up more than one framed piece. Many of my friends children have created their own masterpieces from my kits - they love being able to create their own stories from the butterflies and see them hanging on the wall.

At the markets I sell a lot of these kits, and I usually get asked if they will be available for sale online. I like to keep some things for my 'market' customers only, but due to popular demand will now be selling these through my stores at bluecaravan, madeit, and etsy from next week. Each kit will be priced at $19.00 plus postage.

I will be loading more stock into my stores, along with these Butterfly Art Kits, next week. I'd love to hear what you think!!

Open and Closed

Hi everyone, on a good note I have reopened my madeit, bluecaravan, and etsy stores again today.
I will be adding lots of stock over the coming weeks to these stores. I am planning on adding a bit of artwork shortly too - instead of just saving it for my next market.

On a slightly sad note, I have recently found out that my local daycare centre may be losing it's funding as of the 30th June. Lots of families in the area rely on this centre and it will be really sad for the community if it is forced to shut its doors. Anyway, in light of this, myself and another Mother have volunteered to try and organise letters, petitions, and emails to Kevin Rudd (whatever it takes really) to try to keep the centre open. Hopefully we will be able to gain the support of the daycare and local community to try and do what we can to keep our little centre open. Even though I already have a really busy life, I can't simply sit back and do nothing about this issue - so I apologise in advance if I become a little slack on the blogging scene.

I never pictured myself as an 'activist' but sometimes I guess duty calls .... right?
Anyone ever been in a similar situation?

One Persons Trash ....

As you probably already know, most of my stock is made from recycled or salvaged materials. You may not know that most of it comes from a wonderful not-for-profit organisation called Reverse Garbage.

Set up in 1998 to support Friends of the Earth - Brisbane, Reverse Garbage sells high quality industrial discards donated by local businesses for re-use. In turn this ensures they do not go into landfill. These products, are sold to the general public at a very low price and are used in a range of craft, art, renovation and school projects.

Until recently Reverse Garbage has resided in West End. Currently they are stocking their new warehouse at 20 Bourke Street, Woolloongabba with their doors set to open on the 21st February 2011! They are holding an official opening on the 26th February with a range of craft classes being held for the kids, among many other exciting things.

Reverse Garbage also supports local artists by selling their wares through their gift shop Echoes. All artists must have at least 75% recycled or reused product in their work in order to sell through the shop. I am lucky enough to be one of the artists in their new gift shop at Woolloongabba!

Today I wanted to introduce you to a designer who also sells on Blue Caravan. Mainichi's beautifully designed jewellery is made by Dearne Herrenberg who creates her designs from her studio in Melbourne.

One of my favourite designs would have to be this necklace made from leather offcuts

Along with leather, Dearne experiments with all kinds of materials. One of her latest designs is made from a recycled plastic fish soy sauce bottle, supplied with take away sushi! I never cease to be amazed at the designs people can come up with using everyday objects.

Also just wanted to let you know that the gorgeous Jen Djula, creator of online ethical store Blue Caravan, has been featured in the latest copy of Home Beautiful. The article talks about her passion for her children, ethical design, and making a difference to the lives of artisans in developing countries. Home Beautiful is on sale now.

Tulipwood Trees & Garden Plan

Hi everyone, we received our garden design back from Palms For Brisbane and are really excited about what they have put together (without a palm in site)!

We asked for a low maintenance yet lush garden, and they have come up with not one but two brilliant designs. After much searching on the internet so that my husband could see what the plants would look like (I received a personal tour in the nursery), we have decided to go with the design with more trees.

They are proposing we plant four Tulipwood and one Frangipani tree across the front of our property, with under-planting of various other plant varieties. I already know that I looooove Frangipani trees (in fact I asked for some to be included and they have included 3) but I have had no experience with the Tulipwood tree. They look to be hardy, but can anyone tell me if they look good all the time or whether they can get 'scruffy'?

Faking It Update .....

Thank you to all those lovely people who gave advice, emailed, or simply commented on my previous post regarding 'faking it'! Your advice was so valuable and certainly contributed to our decision. So I thought it was time to update you all. We have decided to go with the synthetic turf out the back and around the side of our house. I hope it looks as good as this when it's finished ....

We have decided to go with a grass called 'All Season Gold' which has little bits of kind of dead bits in it, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I think it looks quite realistic.

Before the company will lay the turf we are having all the gardens pulled out in preparation for our new garden design, which is being finalised very shortly. We will then replant, and the turf can then be laid last. I am sooo looking forward to this final stage of our renovation - it's been a long one this time - but I guess having a baby in between it all can slow you down somewhat!

I will be sure to post all the before and afters as we finish our little projects.

Thanks also to those who left lovely comments on my last post. Yes, I will be putting some of my retro cards into my madeit, etsy, and bluecaravan store soon. Later this week I will be showing you some more artwork destined for sale at the next BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market.

Faking It

Lately we have been considering 'faking it', and not in a botox, faux fur, or self-tan kind of way but by installing synthetic turf or fake grass.

As the inside is almost complete, we are turning our attention to the outside.

We have an area at the back of our property by the pool that becomes a complete quagmire when it rains, rendering it quite useless. We have even taken to fencing it off from the dog lately, with all the recent rain he seems to be constantly covered in mud up to his armpits!

There are also two areas at the side of the house that are so tiny it's a real inconvenience to bring the lawnmower out (if you know what I mean).

The solution ............. beautiful, evergreen, non-growing (is that a word?), drought hardy fake grass!!

p.s. I must apologise for my recent absence, but it was a big week in our house - my oldest started school! Of coarse all the grandparents had to be there for the big day, so we had my in-laws staying over from Noosa - it was a great week and she had a wonderful first day!!
On the way to school this morning she asked if I thought she would learn to read this week - I didn't have the heart to explain that prep is still play based and it may be a while before she learns to read - looks like I may have a job at home!!

Okay, firstly I have had to confess a few truths in the past here, so I am struggling to find anything that may be the least bit interesting to you - anyway here goes ...

4. As we draw to the end of our renovation I am already planning our next (much to my husbands annoyance) I can't help myself ... another addiction perhaps?

I adore chocolate, and limit myself to 2 lines a night, but am about to read 'Sweet Poison - why sugar makes us fat' by David Gillespie on the recommendation from a friend that it "will change the way I think about food" - I have decided it best to limit myself to one line of chocolate a night whilst reading it

7. I can't wait for school to start back on Friday and daycare to start on Thursday .... okay, I'll add this to my 'crap mother list' too

The support for flood victims has been amazing, with generous contributions from online artists nothing short of incredible. So I thought for my Wednesday feature this week, it was fitting to shine the spotlight on a designer who is supporting the flood crises in a big way.

Kerri, from Driftwood Interiors creates beautiful still life artworks. Her original paintings are produced in watercolour, acrylics and mixed media. Very generously, for the month of January, Kerri is donating all of the profits from her etsy store to the Queensland flood crises!!!

BrisStyle Handmade Ark Appeal

Hi everyone. I was hoping to return to blogging last week, but with all the heartbreak in our beautiful country I just couldn't - it somehow didn't seem right.

We are lucky to live high on a hill and were untouched by the water - friends of ours were not so lucky, with some losing everything. I hope you and your families are safe and well.

With the horrible flood situation in mind, I thought I would let you know about BrisStyles Handmade Ark Flood Appeal initiative. The clever folk over at BrisStyle have been encouraging their members (and non-members) who have an etsy store to list a handmade item, with proceeds to go towards the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal. You can read all about their initiative on their blog.

Of coarse, I was keen to jump on board and have listed my "four seasons in one day" framed artwork to be sold in my etsy store with all proceeds going towards the Premier's fund.

Paper Tree Studio

Hi Everyone, you may have noticed a little name change around here - I'm now Paper Tree Studio. Only a subtle change I know, but one that is important for me going forward.

I have tried to redirect my blog to the new name, but for some reason when I did this through Settings, Publishing none of my followers could 'click into' the new name - when you clicked onto my last post it simply said 'blogger unknown' :( so I am now back to the old paper tree design address - if anyone can help with this I would really appreciate it! Could it be because I needed to do a new post? Not sure, anyway I will sort it out (perhaps a google search is in order).

I know I usually post a Wicked Designer today but with all the pre-Christmas arrangements going on around here (and blog changes) I will not be posting on a designer today.

Twinkling Market Lights

Thought I would share an image of the Christmas Tree in King George Square with you. As always it looks absolutely gorgeous, and was a fantastic backdrop to the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets on Friday night.

We had a wonderful evening with no rain!

Everyone's stand looked magical with lots of twinkling fairy lights. Unfortunately I forgot to charge the batteries on my camera so I don't have any of my own images to share :(

As always, we met lots of lovely handmade supporters.

We were lucky enough to be next to KW Ceramics and Renee Treml - we had an amazing spot right at the entrance to the square. Both of these girls are so lovely. I treated myself to an early Christmas present, a necklace from Kim - I just adore her hand pressed porcelain jewellery. It is very similar to the one below:

Hi everyone, sorry for my brief break - computer problems I'm afraid. All fixed now, as I type this on my new laptop!!

Anyway, enough of my rambling, lets have a look at today's Wicked Designers who I am very excited to be next to at this weekends BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets.

First up is established Brisbane Artist Renee Treml, whose work you may already recognise. I love the way Renee brings a sense of humour into her work. Rather than placing her subjects in predictable environments, Renee places them in very unpredictable ones. The idea of a Frogmouth nesting in a teacup is very humorous, but also has a very serious message challenging the viewer to think about where the Frogmouth will nest when all the trees have gone.

Renee's work can be viewed and purchased through her etsy store. Below are just some of Renee's gorgeous designs.

The second designer, Kim Wallace of KW Ceramics, creates beautiful jewellery, bowls, dishes and ornaments by making impressions with vintage doilies into clay. Kim is also the owner of Udessi a boutique online store for Australian art and craft. Kim's work is available through her etsy store, on her website, and also through udessi.

And I'm sure you all know the rest of this tune! Yes, unfortunately market day was a bit of a 'wash out' but as the song goes I just kept "singing and dancing in the rain" and had a good day dispite all mother nature had to offer!

Thank you to all those lovely people who popped by with their umbrellas in tow - you made it all worthwhile.

Luckily set-up was achieved prior to any downpours and miraculously pack-up (albiet early) was also achieved in the dry. Below is an image of my stand at the begininning of the day. Luckily no stock was damaged, I managed to keep it dry, but somehow I ended up looking like a drowned rat (no image of this I am pleased to say)!

This week, at the BrisStyle Indie Designers Market, I am lucky enough to be on a stand in between two lovely jewellery makers! Strat Designs and Bella Bjoux both stock gorgeous handmade jewellery so to be fair I had to shine the spotlight on both of these wonderful designers.

To the right of me this weekend is Strat Designs whose jewellery is primarily made of resin. Bored With Your Ironing Board?

As all the little thing that need finishing off around our home start to speak louder as a collective, I turn my attention toward things I can control such as our ironing board cover. Okay, I never said I was completely sane!

Don't know about you but my ironing board hides in shame in a dark recess of our house. Although I would prefer it never come out at all realistically this is not the case. Sick of staring at my quilted Sheridan all white cover, I decided it was high time to update it. After flicking through an Inside Out magazine I came across this lovely ironing board cover by Sass Home.

Of coarse, I went straight to my computer to order one, when much to my horror I found I had to go into a store in order to purchase :( !! Now, with time being oh so precious these days I am mounting a search for one I can buy online, any excuse to not have to step foot into a Westfield Shopping Centre. Of coarse these ones from Sass Home are quite lovely - anyone know where I can purchase a similar one without pounding the pavement?

Hope I'm not sounding too lazy. Looking forward to the weekend this week as I have had my youngest at home with what they think may be the flu (in summer - I know), with my husband away during the week - I think the weekend is my turn for some down time. Etsy Front Page & My First BiTM

Hi everyone, hope you all had a great weekend. I had a weekend filled with renovation bits and pieces. This morning however, I woke to an email telling me that one of my garlands had made the front page of etsy ..... wow, can you imagine my excitement!

Below is the image from craftcult. The lovely ladies at craftcult put together a treasury on their favourite Christmas colour. I think you will agree, there are some beautiful images of Christmas goodies from all over the world included in the treasury. On Friday night I had my first BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market. My sister (who I am very grateful to for her help) and I, had a great night! Despite the threat of rain, King George Square had a great vibe with loads of people looking to buy handmade. All the stallholders had fantastic stands with lovely twinkling lights, there was a band playing, and the atmosphere was great. Thanks to all who stopped by, it was lovely to meet you, thanks so much for your purchases and kind words.

Below are some images taken after we finished setting up. Not a very flattering image of me in the first one - my sister encouraged me to be in the shot, and as I wouldn't this is the best she was going to get!

Thanks again to all the lovely BrisStyle ladies who do such a wonderful job setting up and controlling the markets. They make everthing seem like such a breeze!!

Hi everyone, as promised I am showing you the before and afters of my main bathroom along with a budget breakdown - and yes, it is scary!

The image below shows the main bathroom after renovations. Okay it is not finished, we still have some sanding and painting, and a mirror to put up but I couldn't wait to show you our transformation.

As you can see it is quite a bit space 3.5m x 2.5m - so I had some room to put in my freestanding bath and a huge shower.

Now to the before (I can't believe I am showing you this) but as you will see below there used to be three small rooms in this space. The previous owners decided it was a good idea to have all of the surfaces resprayed prior to selling - the images below show the result of this - all the surfaces started to peel around 6 months after we moved in. I knew they were sprayed when we bought but thought they would last longer - yuk!

My favourite thing is the freestanding bath and the gorgeous waterfall bath spout below.

Now to the Budget - if you remember from a previous post a real estate friend told me to try and do both for $15,000 (impossible!) I then revised the budget to $20,000 which I knew was going to be a challenge! The result for both the ensuite and main bathroom:

Tiling cost $4600, Tiles $2147, fittings $5600, plumbing $4500, building works and electrical around $4000 (final figures on this not in yet), glass and glazier $1155, towel rails and lighting around $700. Okay how are we going ...... that totals $22,702! Okay, being realistic this is only a little over a 10% blowout which is not bad considering the spaces.

Wednesday Wicked Design - Shazzabeth

This weeks spotlight features the gorgeous designs of Shazzabeth Creations. Sharon handcrafts beautiful designer jewellery from her studio in Ipswich. As she states in her etsy profile, she started out creating beaded jewellery, but now the majority of her work uses chainmaille and wirework. She also works with sterling silver, gemstones, Swarovski crystals, copper and brass.

As you will see her designs are exquisitely beautiful. I'm sure, like me, you would love to find one of these pieces under your Christmas tree!

Ensuite Before & After

Hi everyone, thanks for putting up with my slackness at not posting this on Friday. I have a good excuse - all trades only left at 6pm on Friday, and as I had just had my laser eye surgery to correct my vision I was a racked out on valium! Good excuse??!!

Anyway, as promised the before and after shots of my bathrooms begin with my ensuite (decided not to bore you all with a really long post on both). Although not totally finished i.e. no towel rails, paint, or pretty things yet (yay shopping). I hope you will all agree it is an improvement.

Please remember, this is no glam magazine worthy bathroom makeover. I had very little time to organise the bathroom renovations, and I was on a really tight budget.

Yes, the ensuite used to be my walk-in-robe which has now been relocated (I'll do a post on this at a later date). As you can see it is not a very big room - 2.5m long x 1.4m wide, but we have managed to fit in a big shower, toilet and vanity. I love the way my new tiles look.

Some of my favourite things would have to be the shelf I had installed with the mirrored cabinets above - lots of storage - yay!!!

And, the rain shower head - love, love!

On a slightly disappointing note: You may notice from the image below that along with towel rails and paint, the toilet buttons are missing on the toilet - unfortunately one of the things I had to put up with when I used the BDW at Springwood. We got a really good deal on all of our fixtures with them, and I don't like to blog badly about anyone, however, I have had a disappointing experience them when it comes to delivery of what I purchased. Although they have been accommodating in fixing up all the errors there were far too many errors for one renovation. I guess we can just put it down to dumb luck, but as you can imagine this put a real strain on my week ...... okay ...... I'll admit I was stressed out rather badly before my operation!

Speaking of which, my eye op was a phenomenal success - I can now see clearly with no contacts! There was no pain, and the whole operation took around 15 minutes! Should have done it years ago - I thoroughly recommend it to everyone thinking of having it done - the doctors and staff at the Laser Sight Centre were terrific.

Enough rambling from me now - I will show all the before and afters of the main bathroom on Friday, along with a thorough budget breakdown (need to add it up myself yet) and also give you all my wonderful trade contacts.

Wednesday Wicked Design

What better way to kick off my new segment than with a fellow BrisStyler who is not only wicked by name, but wicked by design! Teneale from Wicked Child Designs states on her blog she simply 'likes to make softies'. As you will see there is nothing simple about her softies - made from felt, retro fabrics and wool her designs have a distinctive eco cred.

Markets and Winnings!

Hi everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend. I had a fantastic weekend which started with a stand at the BrisStyle Eco Markets on Saturday. Thankfully the rain gods looked after us and ensured we had a beautiful sunny day for the event. It was so lovely to meet all of my customers and chat about handmade design - everyone's comments were really encouraging! Thank you to all who popped by to say hello - you made my day!

I had a really big space this time

I now have to get busy creating some more artwork for the BrisStyle Twilight Markets which will be held in King George Square on Friday the 19th November!

Every market day the BrisStyle team hold a handmade raffle by collecting something from each of our stands - the proceeds go towards a chosen charity for the day. On Saturday this charity was Peninsula Animal Aid. As you may have already guessed, I was lucky enough to win one of two baskets filled with goodies from my fellow BrisStylers! I was sooo excited, not only did I have a fab day, but it was topped off with a basket of handmade goodness. As you can see I feel very spoiled. I managed to snap this picture before my 4 year old took claim to a lot of these lovelies.

In aid of all of the lovely BrisStylers who spend hours and hours on their craft, I have decided to add a new segment to my blog called 'Wednesday Wicked Designs' to showcase some of their amazing talent. Every Wednesday I will post about a fellow BrisStyler and let you know about their designs. So watch out for my first post this Wednesday.

Renovation Update: My bathrooms will be finished this week - Tilers finish on Tuesday, Plumber is in on Wednesday, and Glazier is in on Thursday. This means, with fingers crossed, I will be able to show you all the before and afters on my Friday post before I go in for my laser eye operation - followed by a complete budget breakdown the following week. Can't wait to see them come to life this week with all the 'blingy' bits!

Can You Keep A Secret??

That's the name of the new vintage store in Greenslopes, Brisbane.
After visiting this store, you may well want to keep it a secret, as it's packed full with with retro lovin' goodness!

The store, owned by Emily Jane, is part boutique and part lounge. Emily stocks hand-picked vintage clothing, retro homewares, and collectibles. From old typewriters to the skates you probably wore in the 80's, it is an eclectic vintage lovers mix!

The store is beautifully laid out in an old Queenslander at 653 Logan Road, Greenslopes. I chanced upon it by accident, and wish I had taken my camera so I could share some of Emily's vintage style with you all. It's definitely a store I will be adding to my list when doing the retro rounds. Good luck with your new venture Emily!

At My House This Week - I am madly preparing for BiECO which is on this Saturday. With all the reno's going on at my place this week it has been hard to concentrate.

Reno Update & Goodbyes

Okay firstly to my 'goodbyes' - no I am not going anywhere but today I said goodbye to some faithful old friends. You see, I am having laser eye surgery in two weeks to restore my vision and I had to say goodbye to my contacts today - ahhhh! I have to wear glasses for two whole weeks prior to surgery, and as I have come to rely on my contacts, having worn them for more than 15 years now, they were very hard to give up. I must say, I have a headache that could kill people today due to the fact that my glasses to not have transition lenses (never thought I would need to wear them for any length of time). So I'm not too sure how I will last 13 more days without finding some ridiculous looking sunglasses to put over the top!!

Love to know if anyone else has had this surgery and what your experiences were.

Okay enough of my whining - on to our renovation update. Unfortunately there is not a lot to report as we are in the boring stage - you know in the middle - so I will show you where we are at anyway. The image below shows the main bath with some floor tiles that were laid today. I love them already! The tiles are porcelain and even though I only budgeted for ceramic I am glad I went this way.

The image below shows the ensuite - you can kind of get the idea of the shelf we are having down one side.

The following image shows lots of tiles etc. in our bedroom! Oh the fun of renovation!

Hopefully next week I will be able to show more finished images along with a bit of a budget breakdown - oh and I think I might actually have a breakdown when I finally add it all up!!

Other than sending out lots of orders and preparing for BiECO this week I have been watching my bathrooms slowly taking shape - I'll have some more pictures for you all on Friday.
